Open Source Church

After reading Driven I was struck with a series of curious questions.

Could a local United Methodist Church be run in an autonomous fashion?  Could you truly run an Open Source Church?

When I think of open source I think of people having input and creative power to change a given product.  Think Wikipedia.  The Googled definition of open source is “Denoting software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed with or without modification.”

Is it possible to run a UMC in this fashion, where everyone has an opinion and the power to change, choose, and construct ministry?  What would have to change?  What committees would have to stay (of course the Discipline’s big four, SPRC, Trustees, Finance and Church Council) but what would fall away?

Are there any churches out there using something close to Open Source Ministry?
